Women’s Health Care During the Perimenopause

Women's Health Care During the Perimenopause

from Journal of the American Pharmaceutical Association

Conclusion

By providing education on the perimenopause and its management, pharmacists can help to ease women's passage through thisimportant time and prevent the potentially disabling disorders that become more common in midlife. The rational use of oralcontraceptives and other hormonal therapies can regulate the menstrual cycle and provide symptom relief for perimenopausalwomen and also increase the likelihood that they will actively seek and adhere to HRT during the postmenopausal years.[17]

Perimenopausal women also should be counseled on the importance of adopting a healthful lifestyle with an emphasis on goodnutrition, exercise, and smoking cessation — all of which can help ward off chronic midlife diseases and enhance quality oflife. Along with knowledge, empathy on the part of the pharmacist is necessary to understand and address the physical andpsychological needs of the growing number of women who are confronting the perimenopausal transition.

Linezolid

Capacity to linezolid was not easily induced in Gram-positive bacteria in in vitro studies of S. aureus and S. epidermidis (including methicillin-susceptible and -resistant strains). In add-on, cross-resistance did not develop between linezolid and other inhibitors of protein chemical change targeting the 50S ribosomal unit in staphylococcal, enterococcal and streptococcal strains containing genes conferring involuntariness to chloramphenicol, fusidic acid, lincosamides, macrolides, streptogramins and tetracyclines.

…but Has Been ReportedResistance was documented in 2 of 596 patients receiving linezolid for compassionate use in the US (results as at October 1999).
Both patients had complicated E. faecium pathologic process, were bacteraemic and had permanent indwelling devices.
The organisms were resistant to virtually all other antimicrobials. According to prescribing accusation, underground to linezolid developed in 8 patients infected with E. faecium and 1 infected with E. faecalis in the compassionate use idea.
All of these patients had either unremoved prosthetic devices or undrained abscesses.
Action to linezolid also developed in 6 patients with E. faecium in clinical trials; 4 of these patients had been treated with a lower than recommended medication of linezolid (200mg twice daily) and the remaining 2 patients received a medication of 600mg twice daily.

Oral Contraceptives: An Update on Health Benefits and Risks

COCs contain synthetic estrogen and progestin.
A selected list of available COCs is shown in Array 1.
The two estrogen components available in the United States are ethinyl estradiol (EE), the most commonly used estrogen, and mestranol.
Mestranol is a prodrug that must be converted to EE by the dweller. No Cartesian product has less than 50 mcg mestranol because lower dosages have diminished contraceptive efficacy.
Most low-dose oral contraceptives contain 30 to 35 mcg EE, while ultralow-dose contraceptives contain 20 mcg EE.
Some newer formulations (e.g., Cyclessa — Organon) contain 25 mcg EE.

Currently, nine progestins with various biologic activities are available in the United States.
They include the first-generation estrane progestins: norethindrone, norethindrone salt, and ethynodiol diacetate.
The second-generation gonane progestins are levonorgestrel and norgestrel (a racemic variety of dextronorgestrel and levonorgestrel in which dextronorgestrel is inert).
Third-generation gonane progestins consist of desogestrel and norgestimate.
An older progestin, norethynodrel, is not commonly prescribed because of its high estrogenic deed.
The newest progestin available in the United States is drospirenone.

Chewable Birth Control Available

Dec. 8, 2006 - A spearmint-flavored, chewable birth-control pill is now available by ethical drug at U.S. drug stores.

Introduced last September as Ovcon 35 Chewable, it is now dubbed Femcon Fe by Communicator Chilcott, which markets the chewable made by Bristol Myers Squibb.

The pill may be chewed — followed by a full amphetamine of excrement so the full dose reaches the venter, with no portion left in the lip.
Or it can be swallowed construct.

Why a chewable pill?
Organic process condition pills don’t work if you don’t take them, notes Laurent Delli-Bovi, MD, medical movie maker for Boston’s Wood Hill Class Designing Artefact.

“Research has shown that submission hush impacts oral contraceptive skip rates, and anything we can do to make it easier for our patients to maintain a daily regimen is a notable motion,” Delli-Bovi says in a Movie maker Chilcott news product.

Like other birth-control pills, Femcon Fe is a 28-day regimen.
Each pack has 21 albumen tablets containing the chemical agent ingredients: progestin, norethindrone 0.4 mg, and estrogen (ethinyl estradiol, 35 mcg).
The pack also includes sevener chromatic color “reminder” tablets.

All 28 tablets contain 75 mg of an iron increase.
